Welcome back

Dienstag, Mai 12th, 2009

As time flies by we finally made it back to germany. We are preparing for the delivery of Engelkahle Kid No.3. After a nice birthdayparty at some friends place in Baillargues we hit the road with our Jumpy and drove to germany. We had a very good trip. We were tired but happy when we arrived at 5:30am on sunday. The kids had a good sleep in the car so they were playing/reading in their room. Dagmar and I slept a few hours in our warmed up waterbed.

I unpacked the car and hit the road again to drive to a Cougar Meeting here in Stuttgart. We met at the new PORSCHE Museum. Wonderful to see the nice cars. Unknown Prototypes, new Porsches, old ones.. interesting. As a group of 12 persons (in 8 Cougars) we enjoyed the Museum. Only the smell of gasoline and the loud sound of the engines was missing. There were some soundexamples, but hearing the sound from a speaker is not like standing next to a Porsche and feeling and hearing the engine.

The ugliest Porsche was a prototype for China, called C88. Luckily it never made it, even though the design looked somehow familiar. Maybe the chines copied the design a bit after they saw it. Anyway.

After the Museum we drove to a Restaurant call Cafe del Sol. We had to go through some very heavy rain, thunder, hail. The hail was just peasize, not bigger. Bit we could only go 40-60km/h sometimes. The opposite direction was blocked. It was amazing how much rain could fall in a few minutes.
At the Restaurant I also picked up Dagmar and we had a very good Dinner with our friends from EURO-NECO Cougar team.
Enjoy the pictures: http://fotoalbum.web.de/gast/bigmek/EURO_NECO_Stuttgart_2009

Now I am back to normal, working from home while perparing somehow for the birth. Kids are on the road with Grandparents. Grandpa Dieter built a nice shed in the garden. Small but perfect for lawn mower and other stuff.
More to come… A bientot

Trabant, Easter and sun

Mittwoch, April 15th, 2009

It is absolutely amazing. We have a wonderful spring back here in germany. Lots of sun and warm temperatures of >21C (>70F). Beautiful after this long snowy, icy cold winter here in germany (luckily we were in france). But since we arrived here, the weather is perfect. Just one or two days with some little raindrops, thats it. Looks like we took the sun with us to germany. In Montpellier the last week including easter was cold and rainy. Only 14C max and lots of rain. Our schedule is full and we had lots of fun so far with friends and family. We had BBQ, playground with the kids…
Of course I have to work on my Trabant. Since the little east german car passed inspections I decided to replace Brakepads of the drumsbrakes, check/refill transmission oil, remove some rust and paint the car again.
The brakepads especially on the passenger side were totally worn. Since the last Schwobacup Rallye it was squeeking on the right side and now I saw why. No more substance on the brakepad itself, simply metal on metal (see Picture)

The previous owner gave me lots of spare parts and so I had at least the brakepads for the front. Dagmars uncle gave me parts as well and some useful tools to remove the brakedrums. His brother had a Trabant garage, so I have the tools, yeahh. But it was a lot of work. This car is 26 years old and for a long time nobody did something on the mechanical part. Rust had to be removed and that took a while.

Nobody would believe it, but the Trabant can also have rust. Not everything on this car is Duroplast. No there is also Metal. The frame etc. is all metal. So I had always some rustpanels at the rear for example. I started to sand the rear part and removed the rust. I primed it and sanded it again. So it will look a little better soon when the part is painted again.

On easter we relaxed and the Kids had a lot of fun to find the eggs in the garden. Since it was very sunny again they had to be fast to find the chocolate eggs 🙂 We had a delicious breakfast outside, just like almost every other day.

The baby is kicking a lot and feels fine in Dagmars belly. You can see and feel the movements. Just a few weeks and Baby No.3 will see the light of the real world and we will have some more fun 🙂
We still don’t want to know the gender. So it will be a surprise. Hehe
In a few days we will go back to france, hopefully with the sun 🙂

Back home

Dienstag, April 7th, 2009

Last friday I filled the Tank of our Citroen Jumpy with 80L Diesel, we packed our stuff and took off to our Vacation Trip to Germany. Fabi, Jona,Daggie and me were very excited to come back home after almost 8 months. So the trip on the Toll paid Highways in France was relaxing. Of course you pay almost 50 Euro for one way. But 130km/h speed limit and less traffic makes the travel very easy.
When we wanted to cross the germany border we had passport control for some cars. Due to the NATO/OTAN summit in Baden-Baden, Kehl, Strassbourg the borders were controlled and lots of Police was present.
As soon as we crossed the border the traffic was worse again. Well, not really bad, but I had a higher average speed in France than in germany.
But after just a little bit more than 8 1/2 hours including 2 stops we arrive relaxed at home.
Only the gas prices were crazy. Obviously it is the same before each big Vacation season. The oilcompanies raise the prices several cents the day before it starts. This time they had once more the excuse, that due to higher demand in the USA the prices had to be raised. Sure… The price for Diesel was 1.109 Euro on Friday. I only filled a bit because I knew that it will fall again (everybody knows that). On Sunday the price was already down to 1.049 Euro and on Monday it was down to 0.989 Euro. That is 12 cent less. Was the demand going down soooo bad on the weekend ?
Well, today was the last day at school in several other parts in germany and surprisingly the price went up 10 Cent again to 1.089 Euro. A those Oilcompanies sick or what ? Those Bankmanagers that got million dollar bonus payments even though their companies are runined now are almost lovely compared to the oilcompanies.
Anyway, I drove my Ford Cougar (has his 10th birthday today), the Trabant (passed inspection yesterday again without problems).
We visited friends in Ulm. We went to a swobian Theater where Willi our neighbour is playing (see Pic). Was very funny with also a very good food.

We had lots of good food in the past days.
So we will enjoy our 2 weeks here.

Have fun

Almond Blossom in Spain

Samstag, Februar 14th, 2009

We have school holidays and we planned already last year to make a trip to Mallorca (Baleares Island in the Mediterranean sea). A cheap flight with Ryanair was also booked. The airport was not around the corner. Called Barcelona-Reus. About 1 hour west of Barcelona itself. Small, modern, free parking. Since we wanted to visit Barcelona anyway, we booked it. A little bit more than 4 hours driving time from Baillargues. Relaxed and smooth. Only a small control at the french/spanish border. Our Clio only consumed 5.4L / 100km. The lowest consumption ever. So we took of from Reus in the Ryanair Jet, 25 minutes flight. With only one little problem. I forgot my drivers license. Without a license no Rental car. Luckily we have great neighbours. They took my License and made a copy at the Sixt Car rental in Montpellier and sent it to Sixt in Mallorca. So after one day we got our rental car. We were so happy. Now we could drive around and see the beautiful island. The lady at the rental said, it is not a good idea to drive around without a license because I can go to jail. But after a call at the german embassy they said this won’t happen.
Our Hotel was great. We had a Villa with two bedrooms and kitchen, Jacuzzi, garden… perfect.
Jonathan was not so fit. After one week already in bed he was still not well again. So we only drove around and watched the beautiful scenery, almond blossom and other flowers. This is a very nice time of the year. Temperatures around 16C.

We of course visited the Hard Rock Cafe in Palma. Brandnew. Only 2 months old. Nice location at the harbour. But the food was not so great. Oily Caesars salad and oily Chicken tenders. We told it to the staff and they said, they will forward the feedback. As HRC fans and with currently 17 HRCs visited in Europe/USA this was the worst food. If they want to survive the next summer they must improve.
We saw a little bit of the southern part of Mallorca this time. Since Jonathan had a bad time we could not do that much. We relaxed. Before we left Mallorca we went to a doctor and got some medicine for Jonathan.
Barcelona was our last part of the voyage after about 1 hour drive from Reus. Nice Hotel in the Northwest of Barcelona. The Novotel Barcelona Sant Joan Despi. Only 30-40 minutes with Tram/Subway to the center (La Rambla, Placa de Catalunya, port…). Lots of fun for the Kids. So we visited the port, Aquarium of Barcelona. The Aquarium is a nice place to go. We enjoyed the sharks, Seahorses, Nemo 🙂
The spanish way of living is very relaxing like the one in the south of france even more relaxed. We walked down the Rambla (main shopping street), Rambla del Mar, Placa de Catalunya.
There were lots of artists, markets and so on. Very nice. At the Placa de Catalunya was also the Hard Rock Cafe of Barcelona. A very nice place. Very crowded and very good food. We had a good lunch and so we walked with a full stomach a little more through the wonderful city of Barcelona.
Today we left spain and came back to Baillargues. What a nice week and definitely not our last trip to Barcelona and spain itself. The spanish people are very nice.
So we had a border control, forgotten drivers license and last but not least a defective HD digital Video Camera but a wonderful trip.

Ok, Germany is a worthy second place in the European Soccer Championship. Friends from the USA, Dino, Christine, ALexa and Brynn visited us and the Kids had a lot of fun. Dagmar and the kids finally started the Vacation season and drove to germany. I had to do some work and then take a plane and fly also to Stuttgart. I tried the Best Fly Lufthansa Ticket for 99 Euro. That is a roundtrip from Marseille to Stuttgart and back. But already 4 weeks ago Lufthansa called me, that the flight to Stuttgart has changed. Marseille-Dusseldorf-Stuttgart. Whatever. I was coming home. Even with a extra flight. Only 1 1/2 hours from Montpellier to Marseille. I was almost on time and arrived home in germany. We had a wonderful weekend, because Dagmars Midwife Business had 10th Anniversary and I participated once more at the Oldtime/Youngtimer Rallye SCHWOBACUP.  I made my Trabant ready on friday and Saturday and my family and I enjoyed every minute. Saturday Jonathan went to the Kindergarden Party and Fabian visited a friend.

The 10th anniversary of Dagmars Midwife Business was nice success. Lots of people visited and also Kerstin, Dagmars sister was there with her new born Babygirl Juliane. On Sunday morning I took off with my Neighbour Willy and Fabian. We drove with the 26HP/19KW Trabant to the Rallye. Last year I finished 2nd in my class Buildyear 1976-1987. We were only four last year, so it was kind of lucky. Now we had 11 cars in our class til year 1988. Willy was very good in reading the Roadbook. Fabian made nice pictures and filmed. We were a happy team. At the end we finished 7th out of 11. That was not bad ith only 26HP. We drove to the Black Forrest and many times we could only use 1st or 2nd gear because uphill it was pretty tough for the Trabant. Downhill it was tough for me, because I had to hit the brakes hard and there are no powerbrakes. In the afternoon we also had rain. My first ride in the rain.

We had Fiat X 1/9, Golf GTI, Saab Turbo, Porsche 928S and so on in our group, it was not easy. But we were happy about being not last in the Trabant 🙂

Norbert (he initiated the Rallye) also took Jonathan in his 1973 Beetle RS for a short ride. Jonathan was totally happy 🙂

Today was the day. After such a nice weekend I had a hard time to leave my family. They will stay some weeks in germany until returning to France. I hear in the news, that Lufthansa was supposed to be on strike. Eurowings and Cityline were the ones on strike. They fly for LH. Hey, I chose LH, because I was tired of Air France being on strike many times before. The first time in several years that I chose Lufthansa and they want to be on strike. So I called the Hotline and spend some money there to hear, that my flight is on time. Also the Webpage shows my flight is on time. Around noon I checked again and suddenly my flight was cancelled. Great. Calling again the Hotline they offered me a long train trip or maybe a Air France flight to Marseille. Back to Air France. Wow, what a day. I was laughing. Almost knowing that I might spend another day with my family, Dagmar dropped me off at the airport to change my tickets. Suddenly there was a chance to get the earlier flight with Air France via Lyon to Marseille. So I checked in. At least I tried. Going with the new ticket to the Air France counter I waited in line. Then I was next and the lady told me, I have to use the electronic Ticket counter. There I had to select the Airline I chose. I had Air France, but could not select it and Skyteam/KLM. That could not find my ticket. So I went back to the counter and she said, you must selec Air France, use another machine. Thats what I did. It worked until it was time to print out my Ticket. Waiting 2 minutes a red message appeared: Due to a technical problem it is not  possible to print out the ticket, please go to the next counter…

Now the lady had to laugh also. Damn, am I having this bad touch again where everything goes wrong ??? nooo, but I was close

I finally got my tickets and with 30 minutes delay for each flight I arrive around 6 pm in Marseille. Luggage arrived and my car was still there. But unfortunately with a nother mark from another french driver not being able to park the car correct. It looks more like rubber from the bumper, but it is a mark. Oh I hate that. The ride itself was ok, a little trafficjam due to a big acident was all. After a littel more than 1 1/2 hours I arrived at the apartment.

Back in the second home. Hooray to the numerous airlines in this world that make a usually easy day a sometimes tough experience.

A little late, no strike and finally home

Donnerstag, Juni 12th, 2008

The 11 days in Atlanta are over now. After a night at the Outback Steakhouse with some drinks, Steaks, Bloomin Onion and some final beers at Hooters we ended the stay in Atlanta.

On Wednesday Gerald, Jacques and I drove to the airport and dropped of the Rentals. It was relaxing. We had no pressure. We checked in and went to the Bar in Terminal E. Our flight was supposed to take off at 3:35pm. Due to some mechanical problems we finally took off at 5pm. So it was obvious that Gerald and I will probably not be able to catch our connection flight to Montpellier. We had just 1:10h time between the flights. So we landed at 7:20am in Paris instead of 6:20am. Even with tailwinds of up to 100MPH we had no chance. So we saw that the flight was gone and we went to the connection counter and got new tickets for the 11:25 flight to Monpellier. At the Bordercontroll in Paris we waited. We waited pretty long, because nobody was checked. They were NOT on strike. Officially they said, two pieces of luggage were found to be dangerous and they need to take care. We had to wait 45 minutes. Nobody did anything. No Message, no information. We just waited in line and the policemen were smiling and doing nothing. I saw many things at the airports but nothing like that.

So even in the case of a flight arriving on time we would have been stranded here at the passport control. Hundreds of people were waiting. It was rediculous. Anyway. Finally they opened the doors and were could go on. Gerald and I walked slowly to Terminal 2D while Jacques picked up his luggage and ended his trip here in Paris. Since we had now more than 2 1/2 hours time it was more relaxing that having just a few minutes between the flights. We went to the one restaurant/bar in 2D and had a coffee and some Pain au Chocolat.

So the rest of the trip was ok. We were very tired. But even with a little delay we finally arrived in the sunny Montpellier area. Nice warm temperatures.

I am back in France… A bientot

100F and a married couple

Montag, Juni 9th, 2008

The goes by and our education makes progress. Atlanta is a nice place. Nothing special, but nice…and HOT…since a few days we always have temperatures above 90F (30C). Today we reached almost the 100F. That was really hot.

Clive already left Atlanta. Now Jacques, Gerald, Uli, Pete, TJ and I spend the weenend mostly together. But on Saturday I had mission. A friend of mine, Falko just got married to Christina and they both made their Honeymoontrip to the USA. On the way to Las Vegas they were stopping over in Atlanta with a 6 hour layover. So I picked them up at the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport. After they finished the time consuming part at the airport (immigration, Baggage …) they finally came out of the welcome area and we went out in the heat.

We drove northwest to were our Hotel is and we went our for Dinner at the Longhorn Restaurant. After that funny afternoon/early evening I dropped them off at the Airport again. So they continued their travel to Las Vegas.

The other guys and I decided to go downtown Atlanta. Uli wanted to buy a T-Shirt for his daughter at the Hard Rock Cafe. Equipped with a Hertz Neverlost Navigationsystem we drove downtown. Instead of just going inside the HRC Store we stayed there for a few drinks. Was fun. We had a good time and of course we also bought some stuff in the store. Outside at the parking garage TJ and I were standing under a barrier that is there to let the drivers know that no cars should enter that are higher than 6feet6. Well I am 6feet5 and TJ is about 6feet4.

Today, sunday was mainly a relax day and shopping day to get the last items for our families. Soon we I will fly home to france. I miss my family. I miss Fabi, Jona and Daggie a lot. Well, I’ll be back soon. C ya

Work, Heat, Hooters and a drunk driver

Donnerstag, Juni 5th, 2008

The first half of this week is over. Education planning here is going on. Lots of work here in Atlanta, but also lots of good times in the evening. Lots of colleagues I know since many years are here. We went to some Restaurants, Happy Hour at the Hotel and across the street to Hooters. The famous Restaurant chain with the cute Waitresses. TJ (TeeJay) originally Tai Jung from South Korea took as to a korean Restaurant which was delicious. I will upload some new pictures when I have more time. Network is also slow here at the Hotel.

                            Picture from tuesday

What happens to us when I leave my camera in the Hotelroom… read here

We went after our Happy Hour again with Clive and most of the other colleagues (Tj, Jacques, Gerald, Uli, Peter, Dave, Gary…) to the Hooters Restaurant for a beer. We were sitting outside. Having some talk, fun, beers. Suddenly a Jeep Cherokee got our attention. The car with a drunken driver tried to exit from the parking lot spot with the wheels totally turned so that he exited to the left. But the problem was that Jeep is a little bigger and Gary’s rentalcar was to the right and with the front right side of the Jeep the driver side of Garys Hyundai was totally damaged. But we all and some other guests (13 in total) were witnesses. TJ just hat Ulis Digitalcamera and took a pic of the just taking off Jeep. The police came after 40 minutes and due to all the facts and the license plate they got him in  a few minutes. He was a local guy, living in the neighbourhood. He is in deep trouble now and won’t sleep in his own bed for a while. Driving, yeah maybe as a passenger, not a driver.

TJ is also a technic freak and usually has his High End 5500 USD Canon EOS 1D Digitalcamera or Digital Ixus with him, but he also was without High End tonight. He had his Polaroid Camera with him. He is collecting cameras. He is a pretty good photographer and artist. So we both had no luck with taking good pictures. But the other guy was pretty stupid. Today it is a bad idea to hit and run where Cameras are everywhere and Cellphones even have up to 5 Megapixel. So, don’t drink and drive.

C ya soon

Friends, Music, Birds and once more USA

Sonntag, Juni 1st, 2008

That was a busy month…May was full with visits from friends from germany. It was vacation season and Julius, Hannah, Birgit, Thomas came and Torben, Finn, Helen, Anja and Jochen came. We should not forget Micha, Tanja, Melina and Lilli. We had lots of fun and did some stuff together.

On May 29th was a free concert in Montpellier. A live concert sponsered by RICARD the Pastic company. Main Acts were Martin Solveig, a french DJ and Maroon 5 from LA.According to the newspaper there were 20000 people at the Esplanade de L’Europe. We had lots of luck, because the days before we had rain, rain, rain, rain. But on thursday the weather was just great. Clouds ok, but warm and dry. So it was the perfect Open Air weather. Together with Christian and Daniel, Dagmar and I went to the concert. We had a babysitter for the kids. Our friends Holger&Ute took care. It was a nice concert…and it was FREE

Ute also had to take care of our new pet. The kids found a little bird, that fell out of the nest at a storm a few days before. With a lot of patience and hand feeding we are trying to help this little guy to survive. So far it looks good. The bird eats a lot and seems to grow each day.His name is Piepsi

This saturday I had to go to Atlanta again. Once more this year. Leaving from Montpellier I had to go through Paris Charles de Gaulle. One of the 5 worst Airports in the world. Just selected earlier this year from a US Magazine. Only Badgad and some Airports from Africa and Russia were worse. At least this time it was not too busy and I spent not much time in waiting lines. So from Terminal D to Terminal E was not a big deal this time. I waited for my AF388 flight. Airbus A340-300, 272 seats. One seat for me. Not at a emergency exit seat. No chance. Was already given to someone else. I tried it as usual. No luck for me.

Right after the take-off I found out that my flight will not be as comfortable as it should have been. A very stubborn, narrow minded old fart was sitting in the seat 26D in front of me. After a short time he put his seat the rear position. Definitely comfortable for him, but the Airbus has a very limited leg room. Less than the Boeing 777 from Delta or Air France. It hurt and I asked him politely if he can put his seat in the upright position.  He asked why. Well I told him, that I am 6feet5 (1.96m) and I have NO legroom available when he has the seat in the back position. The passengers around me saw my painful situation and told him that I have my knees almost inside his seat.

He was not happy, but he put the seat straight again. After a short time a Flight Attendant came and he asked her, if he is allowed to put the seat in the back position. She said of course. Then I and the others said, that I have no legroom and nobody was able to give me a Emergency Exit seat. She just said it is not her problem. So the old guy put the seat to the rear again. The cabin chef came and talked with me and she apologized that the flight is booked and of course nobody wants to change seats. She said she can’t tell the man to stop that. Of course she said, usually people have the understanding of this situation. But this guy did not really care. In all my flights I never had such a stubborn A..hole in front of me. usually the people understand when I tell them my situation. It is mostly those older people, and usually smaller people that are not very comprehensive. I don’t know why. This guy gave me a hard time. During the lunch he had to put his seat upright but he did not do it,because the guy in front of him had his seat a little litle bit in the rear position. Not that bad. The old fart was not that tall and had enough room. So he told me he can’t do it because the guy in front is not doing it. I should ask him. I was really upset. I was almost close to punch the seat with my fist, so that he will have the food on his clothes…But I closed my eyes, thought about my lovely family and calmed down. I asked the Flight Attendant if she can ask those two guys to go forward. Man I feeled like in kindergarden. This old man should have more experience with his probably 70 years.

Anyway. The rest of the flight was not pleasant. At least the final 3 hours he did not move the seat. The people next to me all gave him bad looks because he was so stubborn. That was really sweet. The one old lady left of me wanted to give me a extra pillow to protect my knees. I had to tell her, that there is no room left for a pillow either.

So we landed with a little delay in Atlanta. I had not that good luck from last time in March. Airplanes from China and Russia arrived right before us. So many chinese and russians were in line. Not too bad. But we all know that speaking english in China or Russia is even worse than in germany for example. So many times the interpretor was called to the immagration officers. That took some time. The Luggage was already there. Then something totally unusual happened. I had to wait in a 100m line to get through customs. In 14 years travelling to the US I never had that. In New York, Washington and so on are more custom officers. Here were only 4 for about 1000 passengers.

At least dropping off the luggage (I know only Atlanta doing that) and go to a final security check (JFK, Newark, Washington, Minneapolis don’t do that, after immigration and customs you can exit the terminal without dropping luggage off again and go through another Securtiy check) . The waiting line was short and I took the Airport Train to the Baggage claim. This is so stupid. You already got your luggage and drop it off again. Than you must wait at least 30-45 minutes in the first building at one of the Baggage claims that have not just your flight there, but many other flights as well. That part of the terminal is so crowded, it is bad.

Clive, my british colleague was already waiting at the Hertz Car Rental. We drive together. I got a little Nissan Versa. Today I changed it to a Mazda 6, that saves more than 100 USD because I rented it locally near the Hotel and not at the Airport.

Other colleagues were also waiting at the Hotel to have Dinner with us. Domi, TJ, Uli were coming with us.

After buying some stuff at Krogers we checked in and got nice rooms. With two 32 Inch LCD TVs. Nice….

We went to Williamsons Brothers BBQ to have some Ribs, Steaks… That was soooooo delicious.

My toiletflush was already broken and got fixed today. Weather is warm and sticky. They expect some Thunderstorms today and also the next days. C ya
